CHILDREN IN GRADES K - 6

Faith Formation is a lifetime journey for everyone.

Since we believe that religious formation occurs within a family and community, our thrust educationally, is to remind adults of their identity as baptized Christians and to help them to better appreciate what God calls each one of us to.  We see our direct formal education of children as a complement to the religious formation which is happening in the family.  Parents attend meetings and parents also join their children for special events at all grade levels.

Volunteer catechists share their faith with small groups of children in grades 1-6.  Many of these groups (with the exception of Levels 1& 2) meet in the homes of the volunteer catechist.  Some meet in the center on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and evenings. All Level 1& Level 2 groups meet in the center on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons or evenings.

Special needs program ... Children with Special Needs... St. Joseph ’s has a wonderful Faith Formation program for children who have special needs.  There are about 20 children every year.  The group meets in the O'Connell Room in the Parish Center from September through April on Tuesdays from 4:30 until 5:30 pm .

Each week, catechists creatively present lessons to the children, one-on-one.   The lesson is followed by a group para-liturgy or project that includes all of the children.  The curriculum and all of the supplies are provided.  The coordinator, Kathy Knott, welcomes the children and oversees the Tuesday sessions.

If you are interested in teaching or if you would simply like more information, please call the Faith Formation Office at 631-587-4717.

  Can you help?

1.  Volunteer catechists are invited to teach small groups of 6 to 10 children.
2.  Volunteer catechists are invited to work one on one with children who have special needs.
3.  Volunteers are invited to assist at First Communion and Confirmation celebrations.  The volunteer would greet the guests and give them a worship aid, would help
the children to find their places, and would usher the people to Communion.
4.  Volunteers are invited to fold and staple.  We keep a list and call these volunteers when the need arises.

If you are able to assist in any way, please call the Faith Formation office at 587-4717 or e-mail faithformation@stjosephsbabylon.org.
