From the December 31, 2000 Pastoral Letter:

Dear Friends,

When I was assigned to St. Joseph’s Parish two years ago, I met in rapid succession several young adults who wanted to talk about decisions they had made to terminate pregnancies that resulted from relationships they were in at the time. In thinking about how I might support them, I did some research about this typ
Over the last two years, I have met several other adults desiring to reflect and pray about the same decision. After consulting with some of the members of our parish staff, we have decided to offer a space for this ritualization and healing to occur. We have constructed a simple garden in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. It has a statue of Joseph holding Jesus, a few benches and a place to leave flowers. The area is well lit and the cemetery gates are not locked so visitors could select their own time for visiting. We are making a simple announcement to the members of our parish about this opportunity in the hopes that as the word spreads it will offer a place of hospitality and healing. We recognize the burdens and tenuousness of young people and adults who carry this weight, as well as those who have lost young children in death, so we would like to keep our efforts informal. We also hope that this effort could be the beginning of further contact with the church community and further support and encouragement that all of us might offer.

Sincerely yours,
John J. Barrett
