INFORMATION FOR CATECHISTS
Catechists are volunteers who share their faith with the children of our parish.
Catechists may choose to meet with their groups in the Parish Center, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons 4:30 - 5:30 pm or Tuesday and Wednesday evenings 6:30 - 7:30 pm (All Level 1 & 2 groups meet in the building) or they may choose to teach at home.
Catechists who invite children into their home choose the day and time for the weekly meetings. The ideal group size is 6 children. Therefore many catechists are required. Please consider sharing your faith with a small group of children.
Three catechist meetings are offered for each grade level to discuss the content of upcoming lessons. There is a September orientation meeting for new catechists. The meetings begin in Nolan Hall. We begin with prayer and an introduction and then move to classrooms where Grade Level Coordinators review the key theological points to be presented in the unit. The Catechist Manuals provide a wealth of information. The Grade Level Coordinators keep in frequent phone contact with their catechists. The Director and Faith Formation staff provide calendars, lesson plans, and student handouts. All do their best to support catechists in their ministry.

Volunteer Registration
Effective January 1, 2000 all volunteers in parish ministries in the diocese of Rockville Centre are required to complete a simple registration process with their home parish. Additional confidential background checks are required for all volunteers who serve children, youth and the elderly. This policy is designed to protect those entrusted to our care.
VIRTUS
The office of Child Protection in the Diocese of Rockville Centre requires all adults who volunteer to work with children to participate in a VIRTUS training session.
VIRTUS sessions will be given at St. Joseph’s on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 from 9:30 am until 12:30 pm in the O’Connell room and again in the evening from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm. If you have not yet participated in a VIRTUS session, please sign up online at www.virtus.org and click on the “registration” button and then scroll down to “Rockville Centre” diocese and follow from there.
