Prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage

Documents you will need for your meeting with Priest/ Deacon
1. Baptismal Certificate: All Catholics must produce an updated Baptismal Certificate that has been issued recently from the Church of Baptism (that is within six months from the day of your wedding). Your Church of Baptism has a record of your entire sacramental history. We ask for a recently issued Baptismal Certificate because it provides official proof that you are presently free to be married in the Catholic Church.
2. Affidavit of Freedom: Canon Law requires an Affidavit of Freedom to Marry. The priest or deacon will provide this form to you. Please return this form to us completed as soon as possible.
3. The Marriage License: You must obtain a marriage license from the State of New York. The license may be obtained at any town hall or city hall in New York State. You will be asked to provide two forms of identification. Licenses require a 24-hour waiting period and are valid for 60 days. Please bring the license with you when you meet the Priest/Deacon at the final meeting. You will receive a Certificate of Marriage from the State 3 to 5 weeks after your wedding.
4. Marriage Preparation Program PRE CANA: Pre-Cana is done online at least six months before your wedding.
